Democratic activists and some senators (notably, Massachusetts Senators Kennedy and Kerry) are trying to round up the 41 votes needed to filibuster the nomination of Samuel Alito to the US Supreme Court. Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee moved his nomination to the floor on a straight party vote.
